    ARTIST BIO

    Rosa SnymanWessels has recently moved from Johannesburg to George in the Western Cape. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree from Unisa. She works in a variety of media, including painting, found objects, fibre, paper and installation art. Her work is concerned with the narratives of the human condition and nature and how parts contribute to the whole. In order to reflect this in her art, she brings disparate materials together such as found objects/plant material, resin, charcoal, paint, pastels, and beeswax that create her personal language.

    Rosa has had work accepted for the Sasol New Signatures in 2009 and 2011. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 she had work selected for the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards. She has also participated in group exhibitions at St Lorient Fashion and Art Gallery in 2010, 2011, 2012 and Fried Contemporary in Pretoria, 2013; KKNK 2018; Absa JHB April 2018; Knysna Art Association, June 2018; Knysna CAP Wrap Dec 2018-Jan 2019. She is also part of the permanent exhibition at the Karoo Art Hotel, Barrydale 2017-2019 and Art@39, Grootbrak 2018-2020.

     

    ARTIST STATEMENT 

    I am interested in contextual values, meanings and metaphors attributed to materials. Therefore, my body of work is an attempt to plunge into the mist of things and to show how deeply our lives are involved with these of other and with potential for both support, loss and fear. Being confined to my home and my studio during the pandemic of Covid-19, induced in me a renewed sense of the physicality of materials. Mostly I became aware of issues of threat, protection and connection: in this sense my work can be viewed as serving as an armour to protect and comment on visible and invisible connections, also interconnections. A conundrum such as covid-19 should be dealt with carefully and it is rather journey through this challenge than smashing against it. Therefore, my work on exhibition represents the unresolved reality of the complexity of the human condition through a process, which represents creation and denotes accumulation and growth. Not an actual event is exposed but a pattern of outer movement as a force operating on human hopes and feelings. The work discloses the inner to the outer world – diversity in relationship of inner and outer worlds.
